Rare & Iconic Tropical Species
Lovely Cotinga
One of Central America’s most coveted birds; Pico Bonito is among the best places in Honduras to observe this elusive species.
Chestnut Colored Woodpecker
Medium-sized crested woodpecker of humid tropical forests. Uncommon in evergreen forests and forest edges. Usually forages in the middle to upper canopy. Both sexes are bright chestnut-brown with a shaggy blond crest; males have a distinctive red mustache.
Boat-Billed Heron
Unusual nocturnal heron found in mangroves and freshwater marshes. Roosts in trees by day and feeds along lakes and rivers at night. Recognized by its oversized bill, large brown eyes, black crown, pinkish breast, and silvery-gray back. Juveniles are browner and duller.
Tody Motmot
Small, elusive bird of the shady understory in humid tropical forests. Usually sits quietly at low to mid-levels and flies only when disturbed. Identified by its dull green plumage, rusty cap, white whisker marks, and short tail without racket tips.
